Kwikset SmartKey Reset: What to Gather First

SmartKey locks do not use a numeric reset code. This process rekeys the lock so a different compatible key operates it. You need the current working key; these owner steps are not a way to open a lock when the key is missing or the lock is jammed.

Before starting, identify the lock as a Kwikset SmartKey model and have everything ready. If your lock’s design or instructions differ from the steps below, use the manufacturer’s information for that model.

  • The current working key — You must be able to insert and turn the key that currently operates the lock. Keep it nearby until the new key has passed your test.
  • A new key cut for the lock — Use a properly cut, compatible replacement key. A key that is not cut for the lock will not operate it after rekeying.
  • The supplied learning tool — Have the small learning tool that came with the SmartKey lock ready. The procedure uses it briefly in the small opening on the lock.
  • A safe way to test — If the lock is on a door, open the door and keep it open while you work and test the keys. That way, you can check the lock without risking an accidental lockout.

How to Reset a Kwikset SmartKey Lock With Your Current Key

Work through the sequence without forcing the key or the learning tool. The lock’s keyway must stay in the stated position for the learning step to work. If it resists or the parts do not move as described, stop rather than applying extra pressure.

  1. Insert the current key — Push the key that currently works all the way into the keyway. Make sure it is fully seated before turning it.
  2. Turn the current key a quarter turn clockwise — Rotate the key 90 degrees clockwise. It should remain in the lock in this turned position; do not pull it out yet.
  3. Insert and remove the learning tool — Push the supplied learning tool fully into the small opening for it, then pull the tool back out. Do not remove the current key until you have completed this action.
  4. Remove the current key — Pull the current key straight out of the lock. Keep it nearby in case you need to check which key operated the lock before the change.
  5. Insert the new key — Push the new, compatible key all the way into the keyway. Do not use a key that is only partly inserted.
  6. Turn the new key half a turn counterclockwise — Rotate the new key 180 degrees counterclockwise, then remove it. This completes the rekeying sequence.
  7. Test the new key with the door open — Reinsert the new key and turn it to check that it operates the lock. If you have the former key, check it as well; it should no longer operate the rekeyed lock. Keep the door open until your test is complete.

If Your Kwikset SmartKey Reset Does Not Work

A failed turn or a key that still behaves as before can mean the rekeying sequence did not complete. Check these common issues once, without forcing the lock.

The key was not fully inserted

Both the current key and the new key need to sit fully in the keyway. Start over only if the lock turns normally and you can follow the sequence from the beginning.

The key was turned in the wrong direction or amount

The current key turns 90 degrees clockwise before the learning step; the new key turns 180 degrees counterclockwise afterward. Don’t guess at a different position if your lock does not match these steps.

The learning tool did not go fully into its opening

The tool must be fully inserted and removed during the sequence. If it will not seat easily, stop rather than pushing harder or inserting another object.

Your model uses different instructions or has a fault

SmartKey lock designs can vary, and a worn or damaged lock may not complete the change. Check the Kwikset support page for model-specific owner information; if the lock still will not work, contact a locksmith.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Kwikset SmartKey lock have a reset code?

No. SmartKey rekeying changes which compatible physical key operates the lock; it does not set or clear a keypad code. If you mean a keypad code on a separate electronic lock, check the instructions for that exact model.

Can I rekey a Kwikset SmartKey lock without its current key?

The owner rekeying process above requires the current working key. If yours is lost, don’t try to force or dismantle the lock; call a locksmith to discuss the lock and your options.

What if my new key turns but the lock does not operate?

Keep the door open and stop if the key catches, feels unusually stiff, or fails to move the lock. The key may not be compatible or cut correctly, or the rekeying sequence may not have completed. A locksmith can inspect it without risking a lockout.

Should I test the old key after rekeying my Kwikset SmartKey lock?

Yes, if you still have it, test the new and former keys with the door open. Confirm the new key operates the lock before closing the door, and make sure the former key no longer does.
