What You Need Before a Schlage Encode Reset
- Access to the lock’s interior — The reset button is on the interior assembly, under the battery cover. Only reset a lock you own or are authorized to manage.
- A clear path for the bolt — Leave the door open while you reset and test the lock. This lets you check its operation without the door closing around an untested deadbolt.
- Be ready to set it up again — A factory reset removes programmed settings and codes. Have the lock’s setup information available so you can configure it again afterward.
- The correct instructions for your model — Button placement can vary by model. Schlage’s support page provides model-specific manuals and help.
How to Reset a Schlage Encode at the Interior Button
These steps describe the factory reset for Schlage Encode locks with an interior reset button. A factory reset is different from changing one user code: it clears the lock’s programmed settings and codes, so plan to set it up again.
- Keep the door open — Open the door and leave it open for the reset and test. Make sure the deadbolt has room to extend and retract.
- Remove the battery cover — Take off the cover on the interior side of the lock. Locate the small black reset button on the interior assembly.
- Press and hold the reset button — Keep the black button pressed. Do not release it before the next action.
- Press and release the exterior Schlage button — While still holding the interior reset button, press the Schlage button on the outside keypad once, then release the exterior button.
- Release the interior reset button — Let go of the black reset button. Watch and listen for the lock’s confirmation: the exterior Schlage button should flash green and the lock should beep.
- Set up and test the lock again — Once the reset is complete, configure the lock and its access codes again using the setup information for your model. With the door still open, test the keypad and deadbolt before closing the door.

Why Your Schlage Encode Reset May Not Complete
The buttons were pressed in the wrong order
Hold the interior reset button first. While holding it, press and release the exterior Schlage button, then release the interior button.
The reset button was released too soon
Keep holding the interior button until after you press and release the exterior button. If you did not get the green flash and beep, try the sequence again.
The button location differs on your model
Check the model name and button layout on your lock. Use the model-specific instructions if the reset button does not match the location described here.
The lock still has a mechanical problem
A reset will not correct a bolt that binds or a lock that has damaged components. Avoid forcing the deadbolt; inspect whether the door and bolt move freely while the door is open.

Frequently asked questions
Will a factory reset erase my Schlage Encode user codes?
Yes. A factory reset clears the lock’s programmed codes and settings, so you will need to configure it again. Make sure you have the setup information for your lock before you begin.
Do I need the current programming code to reset a Schlage Encode?
The factory-reset sequence uses the interior reset button rather than the keypad programming code. You must be able to access the lock’s interior assembly, and you should only reset a lock you own or are authorized to manage.
Why did my Schlage Encode not flash green or beep?
The sequence may not have completed, or your model may use a different button layout. Check the model-specific instructions and repeat the button sequence carefully; if there is still no confirmation, have the lock checked.
Will resetting my Schlage Encode fix a deadbolt that sticks?
Not necessarily. A factory reset changes electronic settings, but it does not repair a mechanical bind or a door alignment problem. Test the bolt with the door open, and call a locksmith if it still will not move freely.
