What to Have Ready for a Master Lock Box Code Change
These steps are for a Master Lock box with a reset lever inside the open compartment. Keep the compartment door open throughout the reset and testing process.
- The current combination or key — Use the current combination to open the box, or use its key if your model has a key. These instructions are for owners who already have authorized access.
- An open compartment — The reset lever is inside the compartment on the models covered here. Do not try to change the combination while the door is closed.
- A new combination you can remember — Choose a combination you can enter reliably. Avoid choosing it until the box is open, so you can set and test it without closing the compartment.
- The model information — Look for the model number on the box or packaging. Reset controls vary across Master Lock products; check the Master Lock support page for the model-specific owner instructions if your lockbox does not have the lever described below.
How a Master Lock Box Reset Works on Lever-Style Models
On many portable Master Lock dial lock boxes with an interior reset lever, the reset sequence is to move the lever, set the dials, and return the lever to its starting position. Keep the compartment door open until you have confirmed that the new combination works.
- Open the compartment with the current combination — Set the existing combination on the dials and open the compartment door in the usual way. If your model uses a key, use the key instead. Do not continue unless you can open the box with authorized access.
- Find the reset lever inside the door — Look for the small lever on the inside of the compartment door. Check that the lever is present before trying these steps; a different reset control means your model may use another procedure.
- Move the lever into its reset position — Push the lever to the left and down, toward the center of the door. It should stay in this position while you set the dials.
- Set each dial to the new combination — Turn the dials one at a time until they display the combination you chose. Make sure every dial is aligned with its marking rather than left between numbers.
- Return the lever to its original position — Push the reset lever up and to the right, back to where it started. Do not close the compartment yet.
- Test the new combination with the door open — Turn the dials away from the new combination, then set them back to the new numbers. Operate the release as you normally would and confirm that the open compartment still opens.
- Close the compartment and scramble the dials — Once the new code passes the open-door test, close the compartment door and turn the dials away from the combination. Keep the code somewhere secure where you can retrieve it.

Why a Master Lock Box Code Change May Not Take
If the box does not respond as expected, leave the compartment open and check these common issues before trying again.
Your model uses a different reset control
Not every Master Lock box has the same lever or reset sequence. Identify the model and use the instructions made for that product rather than forcing a control.
The lever did not return to its starting position
The new combination may not take if the lever remains in reset position. With the compartment open, check that it has moved back up and to the right.
One or more dials are between numbers
A dial that is not fully aligned can make the combination difficult to set or test. Turn each dial until its intended number sits clearly at the marking.
The new code was not tested before closing
Avoid closing the box until the new combination has successfully operated the release with the compartment open. If you already closed it and the code does not work, do not force the lock.
When to Call a Locksmith About a Master Lock Box

Frequently asked questions
Can I change a Master Lock box combination while it is closed?
The lever-style reset described here requires access to the inside of the open compartment. Open the box with its current combination or key first, and keep it open until the new code has been tested.
Does this reset procedure work on every Master Lock box?
No. Master Lock box models can have different reset controls and instructions. These steps apply to many portable dial models with an interior reset lever; check the model-specific directions if your box looks different.
How can I check that the new lockbox code works?
With the compartment door still open, scramble the dials and then set them to the new combination. Operate the release to confirm it works before closing the door.
What should I do if I forgot the current code?
Do not try to force the box or defeat its lock. If you do not have the current combination or key, contact a locksmith to discuss safe options for your lockbox.
