What to Have Ready for a Master Lock Combination Reset
A reset requires an open lock and the current combination. Gather these things before you begin so you can complete the change without leaving the lock partway through the process.
- The current combination — You must be able to open the padlock with its existing combination. This guide does not cover opening a lock when you do not know the combination.
- The open padlock — Keep the shackle open while you set and test the new combination. Do not close the lock until you have checked that the new code works.
- A new combination you can remember — Choose a code before moving the shackle into its reset position. Make sure you can enter it accurately on the dials.
- Instructions for your exact model — Reset methods can vary between Master Lock models. The Master Lock support page has manuals and help for matching the procedure to your lock.
How to Reset a Master Lock Combination Lock
These steps describe the shackle-reset method used on common resettable dial padlocks. Check your model’s instructions if its shackle or reset mechanism differs; do not force a part that does not move as described.
- Open the padlock with the current combination — Turn the dials to the combination that currently opens the lock, then pull the shackle up. Leave the lock open while you change the code.
- Turn the shackle into the reset position — Rotate the open shackle about 90 degrees from its normal position. On the shackle-reset method, the shackle aligns with a notch or marked reset position.
- Press the shackle down — Push the shackle down into the lock body. On models that use a two-turn reset position, keep pressing and rotate the shackle another 90 degrees.
- Set the new combination — While the shackle remains pressed in the reset position, turn each dial to the number you chose. Check each dial before moving on.
- Return the shackle to its normal position — Lift the shackle, then rotate it back to the position where it opened. Let it rise fully; the dials should no longer be in reset mode.
- Test the new code while the lock is open — Turn the dials away from the new combination, then enter the new code again. Pull the shackle to confirm it releases before closing the padlock.
- Close the lock and scramble the dials — After the new combination works, close the shackle and spin the dials away from the code. Store the combination somewhere you can find it.

Why a Master Lock Combination Reset May Not Work
If the new code does not open the lock, stop and check the setup before repeating the reset. Confirm that the steps match your model and that you tested the combination with the shackle open.
The shackle was not fully in reset position
The dials may not have accepted a new code if the shackle was only partly pressed or turned. Compare its position with the instructions for your exact padlock.
A dial moved while setting the code
One number out of place can keep the new combination from working. With the lock open, carefully re-enter the code you selected and test it again.
The lock uses a different reset method
Not every Master Lock combination lock uses the same shackle movement. Check the model instructions rather than forcing the shackle or guessing at another sequence.
The lock does not move normally
If the shackle or dials stick, stop applying pressure. A locksmith can assess whether the lock needs service or replacement.

Frequently asked questions
Can I change the combination while the Master Lock is closed?
The shackle-reset method requires you to open the padlock with its current combination first. Keep it open until you have entered and tested the new code.
What if I forgot the current combination?
These reset steps do not open a locked padlock or recover a forgotten combination. Check the lock’s documentation and Master Lock support for options for your model; call a locksmith if you need help with the lock.
Why does my new combination not open the padlock?
A dial may have shifted while you set the code, or your model may use a different reset sequence. If the lock is open, carefully re-enter and test the code; if it remains stuck, stop forcing it and call a locksmith.
Should I close the padlock before testing the new combination?
No. Test the new code while the shackle is still open so you can confirm the combination works before closing the lock. Scramble the dials only after the test succeeds.
